How should it sound?

Replace certainty with a clear correction

Say what you got wrong before explaining how it happened. The person affected should not have to decode a vague “sorry for everything.”

Accountability is not self-attack. Calling yourself terrible can pressure the other person to comfort you; name the behavior and the correction instead.

Examples

Three ways the words can begin

01

“I was wrong. I made an assumption and spoke as if it were a fact. I am correcting that now.”

02

“You told me what happened and I did not believe you. I am sorry for dismissing your account.”

03

“I defended my decision after I knew it had caused a problem. I should have acknowledged that sooner and helped fix it.”

Questions

Does admitting I was wrong make me look weak?

A precise correction usually creates more credibility than defending a claim that no longer holds. It shows that accuracy matters more than winning.

Should I explain my reasoning?

Only after the correction is unmistakable. Keep the explanation short and do not use it to reduce responsibility.
