Difficult conversations
Tell a friend you need space without disappearing
Name the boundary, its shape, and what contact—if any—you can offer next.
Make “space” concrete enough to respect
Vague distance can leave a friend monitoring every message. Say whether you need fewer conversations, a pause from a topic, or a period without contact.
Do not promise a return date you cannot keep. If you can offer a check-in, name it; otherwise be honest that you do not know yet.
Three ways the words can begin
01“I care about you, and I need a quieter few weeks with less messaging. This is about my capacity, not a punishment.”
02“I am not able to keep talking about this topic right now. I need us to pause it, and I will reach out when I can return to it calmly.”
03“I need some distance from the friendship. I do not have a clear timeline, so I do not want to make a promise I may break.”
Do I have to explain why?
Give enough context to make the boundary understandable, but you do not owe every private detail. A boundary can be clear without becoming a debate.
What if they keep contacting me?
Repeat the boundary once in simpler language and follow through on the contact limit you named. Escalate to blocking if needed for safety or peace.
